Dartmouth Park House

A Victorian house in North London with generous proportions but no personality, the result of one of those well-meaning 1990s renovations that smoothed everything out. Our clients wanted colour, pattern and a thread of the traditional without the house feeling like a country cottage.

We went straight for wallpaper in the principal rooms and proper four-poster beds in the bedrooms — traditional elements that ground the house in its Victorian architecture. These are the kinds of choices that give rooms a sense of occasion, a feeling that they have always been this way.

Contemporary furniture, modern colours and unexpected patterns keep things firmly in the present. The result is a house that feels strongly connected to its roots while having the energy and personality of the young family who live there. It is vibrant without being restless.
